A health and safety risk assessment identifies potential hazards within a workplace and the general safety of the building.
Every employer with four or more employees has a legal duty to conduct a safety risk assessments under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations.
The law states that a risk assessment must be 'suitable and sufficient' and it should show that:
A generic and positive thorough check has been made.
The assessment has defined who might be affected.
The Assessment will deal with all the obvious significant risks, taking into account the number of people who could be involved.

Steps to attain a safe working environment
This should include 5 steps:
Step 1: Identify hazards, i.e. anything that may cause harm.
Step 2: Decide who may be harmed, and how.
Step 3: Assess the risks and take action.
Step 4: Make a record of the findings.
Step 5: Review the risk assessment.
All employers and those empowered to ensure the safety of those having use of a building must:
Engage a responsible person to compile a generic risk assessments within a workplace, and a general safety assessment of the building and the buildings boundaries, meaning that it is their responsibility to ensure this is carried out.
An employer or buildings landlord or landlords agent may appoint an appropriate individual or company to carry out a risk assessment on behalf of the organisation, as long as they are competent to do so and attain correct competence to execute and compile the health and safety assessment.

Recognise and control hazards in your workplace.
Create awareness among your employees – and use it as a training tool as well.
Set risk management standards, based on acceptable safe practices and legal requirements.
Reduce incidents in the workplace.
